Today, the term 'art' extends beyond just paining and drawing. It's a culture, it's a lifestyle - it's even a philosophy for some. Have you heard of ecstatic dance, laughter yoga, or VR painting? Dream workshops? Whether you're trying these new art forms, or going for salsa nights, speed sketching or a calligraphy class - there are many new things to try!
Watercolour is a particular medium that is friendly in that you can paint alone, or with others. You can paint indoors or outdoors. It's a way to let go of control and ease your stress after a long day at work. You can develop and try many things as you begin your journey of mastering watercolour painting - you can even add other forms of art to your pieces with calligraphy or sketching!
Watercolour, and "art" in general, is intimidating for those who think they don’t know anything about it. Beyond just artsy splodges of paint, and hipster murals on the side of buildings, many don’t realise that they have it in them to express themselves through art too - whether it’s by putting pen or paintbrush to paper, eye to lens, mouth to microphone, or legs to the dance floor.
Here are some great reasons to just give it a go:
The beauty of watercolour painting, is that you cannot fully control the paint. You can control your brush strokes - but the magic happens as the paint dries. There is no such thing as perfect - every time you paint something, it may look different. We're here to guide you on the basics: which art supplies to start off with, basic brush strokes, easy tutorials (like this rose one), where to find your sources of inspiration, and workshops if you're feeling adventurous or want to make some new friends while trying it out!
Don't forget:
It takes time to develop your own style - but there are many great artists out there you can follow for your own watercolour inspiration. Remember: These are aspirational because no one style is the 'best' style to follow - you chart your own path. On your journey, there is no harm in following other incredible watercolour artists as you begin to find your own groove. Most great artists start out by trying to practice copying others' paintings and developing a style from there!
