Most beginners face the same fear: how do I know if i'm ready to even attend a class?
Well, there's never a 'best' time - as we're all at different skill levels when we start our watercolour journeys. This being said, we can help you with some tips for how you can make the most of your class...no matter what your skill level is!
1. Keep an open mind
This is always key! Don't go in with expectations. The idea of going to a workshop is to learn...so be open to the possibilities.
You never know what you'll achieve by the end of the lesson - so go with the expectation to learn something new from others around you. Most importantly, you need to have FUN! This is an opportunity to flex your painter muscles, get help where you need, and to keep trying with a fun bunch of people!
2. Be present, and learn
What is the point of a workshop or class? To learn. This sounds obvious, but when you're in your watercolour workshop, be present. Take the time to listen to what is being said before you pick up your paintbrush to try.
Almost like university - treat instructors with respect. They're sharing their secrets, hacks, tips and years of knowledge with you.
3. Every artist is different
Each artist has their own techniques even if they paint the same thing. There can be a difference in preference for how to hold a brush, the colours and palettes that are chosen, to how to paint something. So, don't panic if you can't replicate how exactly your watercolour instructor is painting something - it is TOTALLY okay to be comfortable with a different way of doing something. It doesn't mean you're doing this wrong! It just means a different way works for you better.
This being said, it doesn't mean you don't try to learn or pick up someone else's style - it helps you expand your ability, and develop your skill. It allows you to diversify your style and how you paint.
